Matt Gaetz Withdraws Attorney General Nomination, Avoids Prolonged Battle
Rep. Matt Gaetz steps down as Trump’s Attorney General nominee amid ethics investigations and mounting opposition, citing a desire to avoid distractions.

It was an ambitious choice from the start: Congressman Matt Gaetz, a staunch ally of Donald Trump and a leader among the Republican Party’s populist wing, was never going to have an easy path to becoming Attorney General, if there was any path to be seen at all. Today, Gaetz took himself out of the running, announcing his decision to withdraw his name from consideration in order to avoid what he described as a “distraction” to the Trump administration’s agenda.
“While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.” Gaetz said in a post on X announcing his withdrawal, “Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.”

Matt Gaetz: A Bold Voice for the Right
Gaetz had represented Florida’s 1st Congressional District since 2016 before resigning just after his nomination to lead the Department of Justice was announced, During that time, he’s made waves as a champion of conservative values. Known for his fiery rhetoric and his unyielding support of Trump, Gaetz has long been a favorite of the Republican grassroots, if not always of the party establishment.
He’s also been no stranger to controversy. Gaetz faced a federal investigation over allegations of misconduct in 2021, though no charges were ever filed. His critics have pointed to these controversies as reasons for skepticism, while his supporters argue they represent nothing more than political witch hunts.
For Trump, Gaetz seemed like the perfect nominee: loyal, uncompromising, and determined to take on what he and his supporters see as the entrenched bureaucracy within the Department of Justice.
Why Gaetz Withdrew
Even Gaetz’s staunchest supporters acknowledged that his confirmation was always a long shot. Senate Republicans, particularly moderates wary of polarizing nominees, were uneasy with the idea of putting Gaetz at the helm of the Justice Department. His past controversies, combined with his unapologetically combative style, made it clear that a confirmation battle would be an uphill climb.
Further the House Ethics Committee's ongoing investigation into allegations against him further complicated his nomination. Gaetz has been under scrutiny for allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. The House Ethics Committee has been investigating these claims, including testimonies from witnesses alleging that Gaetz paid for sex and engaged in relationships with minors. One witness testified to seeing Gaetz have sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017. These ongoing investigations have raised concerns about Gaetz's suitability to be America’s top law enforcement officer and contributed to his decision to withdraw.
While Gaetz expressed gratitude for Trump’s confidence in him, he acknowledged that stepping aside was the best path forward. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle,” he said.
In withdrawing, Gaetz avoided what could have been a lengthy and bruising confirmation process that might have drawn attention away from Trump’s priorities.
What’s Next for Matt Gaetz?
Minutes after Gaetz withdrew his name to become Attorney General, Trump posted praise for Gaetz in a post on Truth Social expressing appreciation for Gaetz and his future, "I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!"
As for Gaetz, his political career is far from over. In Florida, he remains a powerful figure, and there’s already speculation that his name could be on the short-list to replace Senator Marco Rubio or Representative Mike Walz if they are confirmed for their posts within the second Trump administration.
Alternatively, Gaetz could continue as one of the most influential conservative voices by considering a high-profile media career. Others suggest Gaetz could remain in Trump’s orbit, potentially serving in an advisory capacity or some type of a surrogate that doesn’t need congressional confirmation.
What’s clear is that Gaetz will not just fade into the background. His decision to withdraw may have been pragmatic, but it also sets him up for future opportunities in both Florida politics and on the national stage. For now, Gaetz remains one of the loudest and most unapologetic voices in the conservative movement.
Gaetz’s withdrawal underscores the challenges facing Trump as he works to assemble a cabinet that satisfies both his supporters and the realities of Washington politics. While Gaetz’s nomination was always a long shot, his decision to bow out may ultimately serve both his interests and those of the administration he has fiercely supported.
